BOOK LAUNCH: WEB OF GOLD by DOT SCOTT VENUE: De Tour Gallery, Blenhein, New Zealand DATE & TIME: 6pm Saturday 12th November ALL WELCOME #Gold Rush #Charleston #Historical #Romance In 1867 Charleston, on New Zealand’s West Coast, is a primitive place. Gold has just been found and hastily erected tents and tiny cottages are scattered throughout the roughly felled bush as hopeful miners swarm there in search of a quick fortune. Wooden shop facades line the muddy streets as Doctor Arthur Jones, his wife Felicity and their two daughters arrive from England to find only a tent to live in; an open fire their only source of heat. Patrick Kavanagh travels the treacherous beach route from Hokitika to Charleston, lured by the promise of gold. An Orangeman, he runs up against fiery and resentful Fenians and is injured, resulting in a trip to the new doctor and a meeting with the doctor’s daughter, Amy. There is drama in plenty as love, stolen gold, and fire, not to mention a full scale riot, rock the lives of the men and women of Charleston as they go about their daily business, in a life very different from any they’ve known before. Raised an only child on a remote farm in North Wairarapa, my early education was through the Correspondence School in Wellington and communication was always through the written word. I learned to read and write very early and even better, my mother loved words – a dictionary by my side is still a fact of life. At Iona College in Havelock North, I was lucky enough to have an English teacher (who also taught History) with the same love of words, and this, plus the vivid sort of imagination a child on her own develops, gave me a driving passion to write. A Certificate in Historical Writing, one in Proofreading and Copy Editing and a Diploma in Creative Writing helped me to get short stories and articles published in various magazines and anthologies and I’ve now completed this, my first book. An Illustrated Historical Novel, it is set in Charleston on New Zealand’s West Coast, in the late 1860s, during the height of the gold rush. The sequel is running around in my head.
Award winning children's/teen book, Hieroglyph, is now available in print from Amazon and Createspace.
“Did Ancient Egyptians visit Australia?” 13 year old TC has a secret. No one knows she possesses a supernatural power. Can TC help her Uncle Max, an archaeologist, unearth enough evidence that Ancient Egyptians visited Australia, before he’s discredited in the media by those that want the past to stay buried? “Some would say that I have a gift, but to me it’s always been a curse. Before I changed my mind, I tugged off my gloves and whipped my head left and right, checking to see that no one was watching. I sucked in breath and steadied my nerves then thrust my hands against the stones and touched one of the cartouches. Time and place ripped away.”
The Trilogy: Fabiom risked his life and his sanity to win a Silvana’s love, but his son risks far more – he risks his very soul. And his son has no intention of following in their footsteps, yet what is asked of him might be the greatest sacrifice of all. To see hope restored to a hopeless land, can the cost to a single man be counted? ‘What a lovely book. Literate, elegant and charming, with a touch of whimsy, this is a story in the high fantasy style of Tolkien, although on a more domestic scale.’ ‘'Silvana: The Greening' is definitely for readers who enjoy great prose as much as a great story.’ ‘A beautifully crafted book, which entrances and enthrals from the beginning to the end. This is not a genre that I usually read and I did not expect to find that once I started reading, I would be unable to put it down. I am looking forward to the sequel.’ Amazon Author Page (with book links) https://www.amazon.com/Belinda-Mellor/e/B00KE0INFU Wendy's reviews: Silvana The Greening by Belinda Mellor. 5***** Wondrous and haunting. Like the last lingering sweet note of a plucked harp string this story echoed through my thoughts long after I’d reluctantly closed the final page. My best attempt to categorize this wondrous story with its eloquent prose would be as a literary fantasy. The imagery is hauntingly beautiful and a feast for the senses – floral scents and musical lilts almost wafting off the turning pages. I’m delighted that the next in this series is now out. Silvana is a storytelling masterpiece – highly recommend! Silvana The Turning. 5***** A haunting masterpiece. Bravo. Bravo. Standing ovation. If this book was a piece of classical music, after the last note played, the last page turned, the final sentence read, there would be a pause as the audience reconciled itself that a masterpiece, an intricate weaving of words into raw human emotions, has sadly come to an end. Feelings of loss. Hands unwilling to close the book, wanting to hold onto the threads of the story for just a bit longer. To stay within the world of the Silvanii, which at this twilight moment feels more real than our own flesh and blood lives. A sadder tale than The Greening, one that cuts a bit deeper into our soul, the pages almost weeping with sorrow, but also a message of hope and love. The seeds for the next story have been firmly sown and I await with ardent anticipation Book Three. Author's Bio: Belinda Mellor lives with her husband and daughter and far too many animals on a lifestyle block near Nelson; a place the family came to on holiday some years back and forgot to leave. A background in theology and applied spirituality make her eminently suited to a life of goat milking and egg collecting. At the age of five she won a school award for ‘free expression’ and has not stopped writing since. She was an inaugural winner of an Ian St James literary award for Bronwen’s Dowry, a fantasy story based in the world she would later set her Silvana novels in (published in the Collins anthology At the Stroke of Twelve). Since then she has been awarded a literary bursary and an award for a character-driven story. Numerous of her non-fiction and occasional fiction pieces have appeared in magazines and local newspapers, and a play for children was performed by a theatre-in-education company. Her published works include the two Silvana novels: The Greening and The Turning and, most recently, Bronwen’s Dowry was reprinted in the anthology: All These Shiny Worlds. Her current projects include completing a YA faerie story based on Irish folklore, about two sets of changelings and their fae counterparts; writing the third Silvana book – Restoration; resurrecting a series of children’s stories about a fire-loving salamander family (originally written for an animation company that folded before the project could be realised); and completing a collaborative art book based on the story of creation and why the Creator put THAT tree in such an accessible position. Deep in the wildwood there are trees that are home to the Silvanii – dryad-like spirits of the great trees. They are powerful, wise, and – for the most part – benign. Their voices are sublime, but their song can undo the human mind. |
