The title, The Dove Must Fly, perfectly captures the spirit of this story. This is so much more than one woman’s memoirs; it celebrates the bonds of an extraordinary friendship as a young girl develops into a woman, guided by an exceptional teacher (and friend).
Written in an unassuming style – it’s like Maria is perched on the side of your chair, chatting and laughing alongside you. A highly entertaining read as Maria’s upbringing was so different to mine. I learnt many new aspects about the Philippines and its rich cultures.

Maria (Vicky) Orsolino Gardiner was a former English Teacher form the University of Eastern Philippines, Northern Samar. She and husband Ian who worked in Samar through the SIRDP project emigrated to New Zealand in 1984. They have two children: Toni and Jason. Vicky works at Queen Charlotte College. This is her first book.
