American Agony Blog Tour Post #01

Thank you kindly for hosting me. I want to share with you and your visitors something of vital concern
that is happening all over America. In fact, it's been going on for several years. Sooner or later, it's bound to affect you or someone close to you. It's the Opioid War Against Patients in Pain.

Contrary to media reports, addicts’ deaths from adulterated fentanyl and from fentanylized heroin has
zero relationship to medical prescriptions of morphine, codeine, and all their opioid analogs (chemical spin-offs) for the treatment of various kinds of pain. In fact, fewer than 1% of patients prescribed opioids
ever addict. Nevertheless, Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA) police and Department of Justice (DOJ) prosecutors have American physicians, other opioid-prescribing clinicians, and pharmacists so terrified
of raids, asset seizures, and arrests that millions of patients requiring legal narcotic prescriptions are being denied their medications. Patients are forced to choose between suffering, turning to dangerous “street” drugs, or even suicide.

I document this crisis, along with related topics, in my new book, American AGONY: The Opioid War Against Patients in Pain, published by Fresh Ink Group. As a registered nurse with hands-on pain-patient care plus decades of publishing medical-science material, I felt duty-bound to research and report about this virtual holocaust of ongoing suffering and epidemic of deaths caused by ignorant bureaucrats. I pray no one reading this guest-blog post is a victim of this destruction of the doctor-patient relationship, nor of being abandoned without your essential opioid prescription.

This is such an interesting book. It has been deeply researched and the author knows what she is talking about. This book shines a light on the other side of opioid use, showing that it's not always an addiction story.

Thank you, Beem, author of several wonderful works of fiction. Believe me, I'd have preferred to write some poetry, short stories and satirical pieces...rather than to do the heavy research and intense writing on this gravely serious subject. But my nursing, medical writing/publishing background and my conscience demanded that I dig into these matters, tell the patients', the veterans', the doctors' stories plus decry the opiophobes and challenge government to back off from practicing medicine, and leave opioid prescribing to clinicians treating patients in pain. Thanks for recognizing the book's purpose, Beem.

I've read this book, too, expecting documentation about a problem I'm already familiar with. (E.g., I just had surgery and could not get a 'script for three days of opioid because they were told not to, as I might sell them to an addict--better I buy something off the street, I suppose.) This book astonished me, as I had no idea how big the problem has become, with no end in sight. My state has been cited as having the highest per capita rate of opioid prescriptions, so politicians are scrambling to "do something," which means passing even more asinine drug laws. The cause and effect are circular. I hope this book gains some traction; it tells a story we all need to hear, if not now, someday. Thanks, Helen, for boldly telling the truth about these horribly dangerous efforts to control others' use of drugs. Thanks, Wendy Scott! Great book, Helen Borel!

Thank you, Stephen, for telling how this opiophobic epidemic has affected you personally. Multiply your experience by thousands,
nay 50,000,000+ Americans in pain...and those, I believe, are essentially the patients with neverending lifelong pain...there are millions of others, like you, not getting postop, ER, nor dental opioids for pain. Now too, cancer, hospice-care, children with painful conditions and even...HARK...uh, BARK...your Rover and Meow are not getting their postop narcotics due to DEA-induced paranoia in Veterinarians, telling them owners will swallow their pets' meds. So thanks. I hope this book helps everyone negatively affected by this widespread government infliction of American Agony.
