The world of medicine is changing almost daily. With cuts in funding, doctors having too many patients to deal with and not enough time, health care is definitely suffering - and people are starting to take back their personal power in their medical treatment.
There are many sides to this and in order to ensure proper treatment, it is crucial to do lots of homework. Thankfully, the internet can help in a lot of ways. Do your research, check out sites and look to see what credentials these people have. Then use some of the terms used in those sites to check out other sites. Don't be afraid of natural health sites, take in the information and then look for back up whether it be through medical websites or studies.
Oh, but if I search the internet like that my doctor thinks I'm a hypochondriac!
My response... too bad for your doctor! This is YOUR body, YOUR life and you know your body better than anyone! You've had to live with it your whole life. It is your doctor's job, the one you pay him for with your taxes, to advise you. You have the right to choose to take his advice or not. Some doctors act as if only they have the answers, only they know what is best for you and that is not always true.
The problem is, scientific medicine has been defensively fighting for itself for many years. Doctors had to be arrogant know-it-alls so they wouldn't be questioned. People had to be brought out of the dark ages so they could see this wonderful new era of modern medicine was the only way to go and that folk medicine was killing them. And they were right in a lot of cases! The problem is, they threw the proverbial baby out with the bathwater.
In the early 1800s or so, was when the so-called rise of Modern Medicine started - medicine that was built on scientific study and research. This made it so much better than Grandma's chicken soup recipe or mustard packs, or any of the other outdated 'cures' had been used before then. Folk medicine was shunned as being unscientific and therefore unworthy to use in medical practices, no matter that they had made people feel better for centuries. This couldn't be explained scientifically, therefore it had no business in modern medicine.
Well, it has been scientifically explained now! After a couple of hundred years, Dr. Stephen Rennard not only tested Grandma's chicken soup but canned ones as well, and they worked. In a report on ABC News, Dr. Rennard shows Grandma was right, it can help you feel better.
Another bonus - Grandma's chicken soup doesn't come with a mile-long list of possible interactions with mustard packs and goose-grease, and a 3 minute long commercial on side-effects that cause everything from flatulence to myocardial infarction!
Sure there are lots of "quack" natural treatments, but there are also a lot of medical professionals that don't run the right tests, if they run any, and give people bad advice. So what can we do?
We must take responsibility for our own healthcare by becoming an informed "consumer". There are a couple of good articles about this, one on the University of Minnesota's website and the other on Dr Frank Lipman's website , and I'm sure many more!)
And what they suggest is that being an informed consumer means not taking everything a doctor (or any other health practitioner, health food store, or natural product ad) tells you as Truth. Check it out, look for independent reviews of products (not just the ones on the sales websites), get second opinions, and ask others for recommendations.
If I had listened to what my doctors had told me for years, I would probably be dead by now. It took most of my life to get diagnosed with Celiac disease. Up until then, I was just a "hypochondriac". I searched and researched and asked many different doctors until I finally found one that could actually figure out what was wrong. Those research skills also helped me find answers for others I knew and I eventually wrote a book, I'm Not Crazy... I'm Allergic! , about a relative who was misdiagnosed her entire life.
If you feel good with your doctor/healthcare practitioner, trust what she says to be the best course of action for you, and it works, great! But if you felt that way, you probably wouldn't be reading this blog. Since you are, my best advice to you is - don't give up, you know your body best!
